Temporal information can be obtained either by pump-probe techniques or by phase and amplitude measurements over a large spectral range. Attosecond Science ª Real time observation of electron dynamics in matter We develop advanced attosecond technologies to investigate the light-activated dynamics of matter with extreme time resolution. The Lund Attosecond Science Center (LASC) combines three collaborating research groups: Attosecond Physics: From lasers to applications (Groupleaders: Cord Arnold, Anne L'Huillier) Attosecond XUV Spectroscopy (Groupleader: Johan Mauritsson) Intense XUV Attosecond Physics (Groupleader: Per Johnsson) The aim of LASC is to study dynamics of matter and for the rst time measure pulses shorter than one femtosecond (1 fs = 10 15 s), so called attosecond (1 as = 10 18 s) pulses [1]. With these pulses the possibility to do attosecond time-resolved measurements opened up.

Shape resonances in physics and chemistry arise from the spatial confinement of a particle by a potential barrier. In molecular photoionization, these barriers prevent the electron from escaping instantaneously, so that nuclei may move and modify the potential, thereby affecting the ionization process. By using an attosecond two-color interferometric approach in combination with high spectral Science at the timescale of attoseconds—a billionth of a billionth of a second—allows interrogation of electron dynamics, a study with huge promise for many disciplines. But accessing those ultrashort timescales today relies on custom-built lasers or access to world-class laser science facilities, which is often limited.

Modern Trends in Basic and Applied Laser Spectroscopy
Our measurement indicates an attosecond response of the atomic system, a soft-X-ray pulse duration of 650+/-150as and an attosecond synchronism of the soft-X-ray pulse with the light field.
: one quintillionth (10−18) of a second An attosecond is to a second what a second is to the age of the universe. — IEEE Spectrum. An attosecond ( as) is a very short period of time. It is equal to one quintillionth of a second (or 0.000000000000000001 seconds). It can also be written as 10−18 seconds.

Combining intense extreme ultraviolet and relativistic electron
Our results will expand the field of attosecond science, making it possible to capture the attosecond motion of electrons in a broader range of atoms, molecules, liquids, and materials. Methods Laser system: In our experiment, laser wavelengths of 1.3 and 2 μm are generated in a three-stage OPA seeded by a white-light continuum. Just as femtosecond pulses allow the observation of the motion of atoms in molecules, attosecond pulses will allow us to trace electronic motion and electronic relaxation (such as inner-shell dynamics) in atoms and molecules.
